Mērsraga Canal connects Lake Engure with the Baltic Sea. It was excavated in 1842 to increase the amount of agricultural land available around Lake Engure. The canal is approximately 4 km long.
The canal was dug by hand using shovels, as modern machinery was not yet available at that time. After the canal was created, the water level of Lake Engure dropped by approximately 1.5–2 metres. The deepest point of the canal is xxx metres, with an average width of xxx metres.
Stories about the construction of Mērsraga Canal mention the “amber fever” — large amounts of amber were discovered here during the excavation. The canal banks were once also a popular location for large-scale events and gatherings.
Today, Mērsraga Canal is a popular destination for anglers and visitors looking for peaceful recreation. The Sensāciju taka (Sensation Trail) has been created around the canal and can also be seen from the water. The trail features 19 interesting facts and stories about the history and significance of Mērsraga Canal.
